Questions about basti
- What is a Basti treatment?
- Warm, dosha-specific oil is pooled inside a dough ring placed over one region of the body and kept warm for about 60 minutes. The name tells you where: Kati for the lower back, Griva for the neck, Jaanu for the knees, Uro for the chest, Shiro for the head.
- Is this the same as the Panchakarma Basti?
- No. These are external oil-pooling therapies. The Basti of Panchakarma is a medicated enema, which is a separate procedure prescribed by a physician.
- What is Kati Basti used for?
- Kati Basti is the lower-back version, traditionally used for lumbar spondylitis, disc problems, stiffness and degenerative changes.
- Do I need to lie still?
- Yes, for the length of the session, since the oil is held by a dough ring. The therapist stays with you and tops up warm oil throughout.
- Who should tell the therapist before booking?
- Anyone with a fever, a skin condition over the area, recent surgery, or who is pregnant. For Shiro Basti, mention any scalp infection or recent head injury.
